How To Knit Linen Stitch

On today’s Saturday Stitches we will show you how to knit Linen stitch.

Here, we’re working over an uneven number of stitches. One side of the pattern creates a woven effect and the other side looks like moss stitch. Like the sound of it? Then read on, or click the image below to watch our video tutorial.

TOP TIP FOR LINEN STITCH

For this pattern you will need to work your slip stitches purl-wise. It’s easy to confuse this step so just check the image below to see how your needles should look. Easy peasy!

ROW 1:

  • With the yarn at the back of your work, slip the first stitch purl-wise.
  • Knit the next stitch in the regular way.
  • *Bring the yarn to the front of your work, between the 2 needles, and slip the next stitch purl-wise.
  • Return the yarn to the back by bringing it between the 2 needles, knit the next stitch.*
  • Repeat the steps inside the stars until you have 1 stitch left of your row, knit this last stitch.

ROW 2:

  • Begin your 2nd row with the yarn at the front, slip the first stitch purl-wise.
  • *Take the yarn to the back, slip the next stitch purl-wise.
  • Bring the yarn to the front, purl the next stitch.*
  • Repeat the steps inside the stars until you have 1 stitch left, purl this stitch.

Repeat these 2 rows to form the pattern.

  1. These instructions make so much more sense than the ones I was trying to follow on the ‘Be My Baby’ pattern I purchased. It was a good job I came across your video demonstration. I have been meaning to send you all a message suggesting you fix the instructions on the Be My Baby pattern. I have almost finished it and despite a couple of instances when my concentration went missing, resulting in purl stitches that should have been slipped it is looking good. My daughter in law will be pleased to have the completed garment for Christmas (even though it will be mid summer here in Australia).

    • Thanks for the feedback! We try to constantly review our patterns so please do drop us an email if you spot anything! We’re sure your daughter in law will love your handmade goodness : )
