Wool Week October 2015

For one whole week, starting the 5th of October, the guys and gals at Campaign for Wool are championing and celebrating all things woolly.

It could perhaps be said that we are a little biased when it comes to all things wool – but it really is a most fantabulous fibre! It’s one of the most natural, kind-to-skin, ecological and safe (naturally fire retardant) fibres around AND it’s biodegradable (check our very own HRH Prince Charles demonstrating this fact with this nifty little experiment).

In conclusion: Wool = better for you, better for the world!

So why do we need this campaign, you ask? Welllll, because although we know all of these wonderful things about wool, it seems the fashion and textile industry as a whole perhaps needs some reminding because:

-only 1.3 percent of clothes today are made from wool, when 60 percent are made from synthetic material

-in the world of carpets, only 20 percent still use wool, while 80 percent are synthetic – which will take decades to biodegrade in landfill, if they biodegrade at all

Which means it’s high time we shouted about the wonder of wool! Here’s what’s going on that week, hope to see some of you there:

Monday 5th – Sunday 11th: WATG @ TOPSHOP
Location: Topshop, Oxford Street London

All throughout Wool Week you can find WATG in the multi-floor fashion extravaganza Topshop HQ on Oxford Street. We’ll be there selling some of our classic and bestselling styles as Knit Kits or RTW at our stall on the lower ground floor, so come say hi, check out some of our styles in real life and try some things on, have a go knitting a stitch or two or just have a cheeky squeeze of our Crazy Sexy Wool (you wouldn’t be the first!).

Monday October 5th: Sheep on the row
Location: Savile Row, London

This promises to be a helluva spectacle. This world famous and iconic London street, home to menswear tailoring, is going to be transformed with the help of a little turf and some real life grazing sheep! As well as our woolly buddies, there’ll be sheep-inspired grooming treatments from men’s groomers Murdock London, GQ Magazine will be on hand to capture visitors to report on the best-dressed men in London and of course all the tailoring houses on the Row will be showing off their latest woollen menswear pieces.

Location: the interweb

Friday 9th October is the official Woolly Hat Day! And of course we couldn’t let that go by without a little bit of a fuss. All you have to do to get involved is put on your finest woolly hat and post a picture on instagram tagging @campaignforwool #woollyhatday. It’s not just about celebrating hats and wool though, this is also to raise money for the brilliant Mission to Seafarer’s charity. so please donate as much as you are able by texting WOOL11 £3, £5 or £10 to 70070 and encourage your pals and followers to do the same.

And should you feel like making a brand new hat for the occasion, we’ve donated a pattern which you can download for free – whoop!

Inspired by the Seafarer’s charity, we named it ‘Bill’s Beanie’, after this guy:

Le avventure (13)

And you know how much we love see your makes, so don’t forget to tag us on instagram @woolandthegang if you wear a woolly hat made from a WATG pattern and yarn!
