Inspirations — Christien Meindertsma

We recently heard of Christien Meindertsma through a friend of ours. Miss Meindertsma is a Dutch designer, based in Rotterdam, who works, among other things, with knitwear. We particularly love her Aran rug and Idaho-based Design for a Living World project, which was created for the Nature Conservancy from organic Panama sheep’s wool from Lava Lake Ranch. The aim of her work is to “regain understanding of processes that have become so distant in industrialization” – it’s wonderful to see works both beautiful and conscientious.

Loops Yarncraft Festival

While Iceland has mainly made headlines this year due to the eruption of its rather unpronounceable Eyjafjallajokull volcano, the tiny island nation is host to another noteworthy event this summer: the Loops 2010 yarncraft festival that opened up on June 17th.

We especially love Sarah Applebaum’s “Meta Blanket,” a piece assembled from old crocheted blankets and other unfinished works. The colors are great and it’s especially interesting how she makes something coherent out of such a ragtag variety of projects.

Another one of our favorites is “Sealpelt” by Vík Prjónsdóttir -two super cozy looking blankets that would certainly keep you warm throughout the chilly winters. The native collective, composed of five Icelandic designers and a knitting factory, emphasizes all things local and draws inspiration from mythical folklore and stories.

Taiana Giefer

With both our knitwear designers Jade and Aurelie coming from a Textiles background, they fell in love with Taiana Giefer hand-made felted scarves. Felting can be a hit or miss but Giefer has mastered this technique to a T! All her pieces are made in the USA, each one is an unique piece even if you tried you could never make two scarves the same. We love her use of colour and playful use of scale. Taiana has inspired us to have a go at felting with our CRAZY SEXY WOOL!
